About Sounio

Sounio (Cape Sounion) is situated in the south of Athens. It is renowned for the ancient Temple of Poseidon, the god of sea in classical mythology.

Sounio has been a sacred site since the very ancient times.
There were two ancient temples; the one was dedicated to God Athena (today remains only the foundations) and the other one to Poseidon.
Construction on a grand Temple of Poseidon began around 500 BC but was never completed; the temple was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC. The remains are surrounded on three sides by the sea.

Visitors of Cape Sounio can walk along the large surrounding region, admire the wonderful view to the Aegean islands (Makronisi, Patroklos, Kea, Kithnos, Serifos e.t.c.) and enjoy their meals to the surrounding tavernas.
